As an Army brat, we were quite nomadic. My mom called Mobile, Alabama, home, so it's where my taste buds call home, too. My grandfather was a gifted gardener who produced bountiful tomato plants each summer. He would pick them off the vine and eat them like an apple! I much preferred them sliced thick on a white bread sandwich, with a slab of mayonnaise and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. That distinctive smell of earth and vine really takes me back!
