Date Night in Casablanca

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

I’d wager that the number of weddings preceded by date nights at the movies is seemingly infinite! I’ve met a number of married couples whose dating history included an evening seeing a movie at the Fox Theatre. Are you among that fortunate group of people?

Casablanca“, a beloved classic love story, is part of this year’s Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival at the Fox Theatre!

Let’s imagine, for a moment, what a Date Night in “Casablanca” would look like…through the lens of a few famous quotes from the 1942 film:

“…Round up the usual suspects.” – Captain Renault

While this particular quote isn’t about friends in the movie, in real life today it could refer to gathering mutual friends for an evening on the town! If you’re celebrating a special occasion–an anniversary of your first date or a birthday–perhaps you’ll want to rent Landmarks Lounge to enjoy some Fox-exclusive nibbles and a private bar.

Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine.” Rick

You never know where you might meet your future spouse. Might it be when going to the movies at the Fox Theatre? Perhaps. Imagine that being the case…going to see a movie together at the Fox sounds like a great tradition!

You know what I want to hear. …You played it for her, you can play it for me!” – Rick

One of the favorite pre-movie features of the film festival is hearing Mighty Mo, the Fox’s more than famous pipe organ! DID YOU KNOW: The quote we’ve all heard a million times, “Play it again, Sam.” was not an actual line in the movie.

“…I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” – Rick

If you’ve never been to the Fox Theatre for a movie, it’s the PERFECT place for a first date…or your 50th date, for that matter. The setting is stunning and you get to sit next to each other, and perhaps hold hands for the first time.

Kiss me. Kiss me as if it were the last time.” – Ilsa

I can’t imagine how many kisses have been shared at the Fox Theatre, but we hope your next Fox kiss won’t be your last Fox kiss. Come back for another movie, come back for a concert, come back for the ballet, come back for a private event…just come back for one more Fox Theatre kiss.

Enjoy this trailer of Casablanca, coming to the Fox Theatre on Thursday, July 20 at 7:30 p.m. (tickets)

Mamma Mia!

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

I saw Mamma Mia! at the Fox Theatre in 2014. Years before that, I lived in Greece for more than two years, which makes this musical particularly fun for me.

It’s a spectacular show for any and ALL lovers of performance art, musicals, and especially fans of ABBA. And let’s tell the truth, who isn’t an ABBA fan! Sadly, this the farewell tour, so you don’t want to miss it!

Set on an island paradise in Greece, this is a particularly wonderful opportunity for a Mediterranean menu! If you’re hosting an event during the run of Mamma Mia!–Tuesday, June 13 through Sunday, June 18–and you’re treating your guests to a performance of Mamma Mia! in the main auditorium, then your menu has to be Mediterranean, right? From an Adriatic Sea Antipasti platter to Pistachio Macarons, we’ve got you covered!

Did you know that according to a Harvard study, the Mediterranean diet may promote longevity? At the very least, we know that an AFFAIRS at the FOX special event paired with Mamma Mia! will make for an evening that will live in your memory for years and years!

Now, pull up your ABBA channel on Pandora or those ABBA songs on your iPod and give them a listen. Then call us about planning a special event in the Fox Theatre ballrooms or other special event space in the theatre. We’ll even help coordinate tickets to see Mamma Mia! for you and your guests.

Finding Neverland

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

You can find your own Neverland at the Fox Theatre, as host of a special event in one of our magical ballrooms. They transport you to another place, another time…but they’re actually not so far away.

When you believe, you can fly.” We’ll bring the pixie dust when you come explore with us and discover how the AFFAIRS at the FOX team can help create for you a special event so special that “special” proves inadequate to describe how magnificent it was.

In the meantime, while planning your special event, check out Finding Neverland: The New Musical, playing at the Fox Tuesday, May 16 through Sunday, May 21.

If you happen to be entertaining clients during the run, consider securing Landmarks Lounge–an island unto itself within the theatre–to make your clients feel extra special.

Call us to get the planning started. We’ll contract your private bartender; offer an exquisite menu based on your likes; and take care of all the behind-the-scenes details. And we’ll do everything in our power to help you be a guest at your own gathering!

The upcoming Finding Neverland at the Fox Theatre is based on the 2004 Oscar-winning film Finding Neverland, which starred Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet, and Freddie Highmore. Based on a true story, Finding Neverland follows the story of author J.M. Barrie and his relationship with the family of widow Sylvia Llewelyn Davies, who eventually became Barrie’s inspiration to write Peter Pan. The musical explores the power of imagination to open up new worlds, and the pressures put upon those worlds by the inevitability of growing up.

Enjoy a trailer for Finding Neverland: The New Musical, then call us to start planning your next Fox Theatre party!

Riverdance 20th Anniversary World Tour!

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

Irish dance. Irish food. Those are the makings for a phenomenal experience!

Riverdance, at the Fox Theatre for only five performances over three days, is performing  in more than 60 U.S. cities during their 2017 season! You can see them at the Fox Theatre Friday, May 5, through Sunday, May 7, 2017.

What is Riverdance, you ask? We’ve all seen Irish stepdance–the style of dancing with a stiff upper body and rapid, precise movements of the feet. That’s part of Riverdance performances, but they are so much more. Riverdance is an international dance phenomenon featuring primarily Irish music and dance that tells a powerful tale of ancestors coming to terms with a primitive world, the breadth of human experience though time, and eventually embracing being a part of the world…but it’s far more magical and exciting than that sounds!

Are you one of the more than 25 million people who have witnessed this magnificent show? Having performed at the Fox on numerous occasions, we wholeheartedly welcome Riverdance back to the Fox Theatre for Riverdance – The 20th Anniversary World Tour.

We’d be happy to create an Irish-themed menu for your special event, especially if you’re entertaining clients in Landmarks Lounge! Think about that. How awesome would it be to be in a private event space–only steps from the lobby–prior to the performance and during intermission, with a private bar and treats created just for you?!

Don’t think about it too long. Contact us to book your all-Irish experience during Riverdance at the Fox Theatre!

The Bodyguard

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

The Fox Theatre’s stage has never experienced a drought of love stories. And this season is a banquet of love stories!

The Bodyguard: The Musical‘s U.S. Tour will be spectacularly performed on the Fox Theatre stage Tuesday, March 28 through Sunday, April 2, 2017.

Grammy-winner Whitney Houston starred in the Oscar-nominated movie “The Bodyguard”, which debuted on November 25, 1992. She later graced the stage of the Fox Theatre in July 1999. If you ever have the wonderful opportunity to visit the offices of the Fox Theatre (perhaps when planning a special event?), you’ll get to see an autographed photo of Whitney, and other stars who have played the Fox!

If you’re considering hosting a special event at the Fox Theatre during the run of The Bodyguard: The Musical, there are many, many ways to add “celebrity” to your event. Here are a few considerations to discuss with your Catering Consultant:

  • Have your band perform a selection of Grammy-winning songs!
  • Have your guests greeted by celebrity look-alikes!
  • Feature food stations designed after your favorite celebrities’ favorite foods!
  • If hosting a cocktail hour in the Grand Salon, create great fanfare when the doors to the Egyptian Ballroom are opened to reveal what promises to be a spectacular evening of great food, music and dancing!

If you’re entertaining clients or friends for an evening at the theatre–or creating your own love story–talk with your Catering Consultant about hosting them in Landmarks Lounge, on the lobby level of the Fox!

Love is all around and the Fox Theatre is a wonderful place to share it.

Lots of Love for Elvis

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

Did you know that global sensation Elvis Presley had at least a dozen songs with the word “love” (or a derivation of) in the title? I didn’t, but looking at the list, I recognize the majority of them. Not because I was a huge Elvis fan, but because growing up my brother played Elvis songs incessantly! I’ve since grown to become an Elvis fan–How could one not?

If you too are an Elvis fan, you might want to get your tickets to “Elvis Lives” at the Fox Theatre before they sell out!

If you’re thinking about hosting an Elvis-themed company event, as of this writing, the Egyptian Ballroom is available. If you’re wanting to host a few friends or entertain clients the night of “Elvis Lives”, Landmarks Lounge would be perfect!

What would you serve to guests attending an Elvis tribute concert? If you wanted to serve “The King’s” favorites, the dishes they’d be dining on would include, according to NPR, Fried Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches, Burnt Bacon Sandwiches (I’m not sure that sounds very appetizing to me), Texas Caviar (a black-eyed peas dish), Meatloaf, and Baked Squash…just to name a few.

If you’d like to make these dishes at home, the recipes are in the authorized cookbook titled “Graceland’s Table: Recipes Fit for the King of Rock and Roll“. For your special event at the Fox, we’d be happy to put together an Elvis-inspired menu for you!

Why was/is Elvis Presley such a global sensation? He was unique, energetic and appealed to a young, record-buying audience…that and his songs are just awesome.

There’s another factor that, I believe, contributes to his worldwide popularity. His 1973 concert, “ELVIS: Aloha from Hawaii via SATELLITE” was the world’s first globally broadcast solo artist music concert! How do I know this? I used to work for Intelsat, the world’s largest satellite communications company and the organization that carried the concert on its spacecraft to a live audience of an estimated 1 – 1.5 billion people! That’s an impressive number for 2017, even more so in 1973!

Elvis … Fox Theatre … Egyptian Ballroom … delicious food … a concert with lots of “love”… Doesn’t THAT sound sensational?!

A Little Mermaid’s Birthday Party

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

We’ve had a look back at 2016. Now let’s look to 2017.

Don’t ask me how it happened, but growing up I did not see the Disney classics. The first Disney animated film I ever saw on the big screen was The Little Mermaid. I’ve since seen the film another time or two (and caught up on some of the other Disney classics). THEN, I got to see The Little Mermaid come to life on the stage of the Fox Theatre in 2014!

Ariel and friends are returning to the Fox Theatre stage Thursday, January 12 through Sunday, January 15, 2017! Exciting!

Do you have a daughter, niece, granddaughter or a group of girlfriends celebrating a January birthday? We recommend “A Little Mermaid’s Birthday Party” at the Fox Theatre!

Imagine turning Landmarks Lounge into your own private “Atlantica”, not fathoms down, but a mere few feet—or a short swim—away from your seats in the auditorium!

What? You don’t know about Landmarks Lounge? Let me tell you how awesome it is.

First, the rental is incredibly reasonable, especially for a venue of the caliber of the Fox Theatre. When you rent it, it’s all yours for you and 29 of your closest friends to enjoy for the evening.

We can cater dinner for you to enjoy before the show and create some special desserts—even some exclusively for Fox Theatre private event guests—for the birthday girl(s) to enjoy during intermission! There’s also a built-in bar that you can use as a punch station or if this is a party for grownups, we can contract a bartender and order libations for you to enjoy. And ask us about finding a costumed Ariel for photo ops! Wouldn’t that be special?!

Oh, and if your party is for 10 or more guests, you can get a group rate on tickets to see The Little Mermaid!

Birthdays are meant to be celebrated. So, if you’re a Disney fan, celebrate in style at the Fox Theatre with an AFFAIRS at the FOX event. Celebrate with “A Little Mermaid’s Birthday Party”!

Fundraising Talent

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

Successful fundraisers have fantastic entertainment talent. And they have brilliant planners (and professional caterers) working tireless hours behind the scenes, sometimes more than a year before the event date, and sometimes only a few weeks before! No matter the length of planning, a successful event takes great talent.

Have you ever experienced Mannheim Steamroller? If you were to tailor a fundraising event (or holiday party) to this show, coming to the Fox Theatre in December, you could hire Mannheim Steamroller-inspired talent (we can help with that) and for the décor you could go absolutely over-the-top festive with the lights (we can help with that, too)!

This band is incredibly talented and we’d be happy to help secure tickets for you and your private event guests as part of your party, whether a company holiday party in the Egyptian Ballroom or a gathering of close friends in Landmarks Lounge.

If you do indeed host your event in conjunction with Mannheim Steamroller’s Fox performance, may I offer a few ideas to consider for your menu:

  • Cinnamon Hot Chocolate – the best-selling non-food item on their website
  • German-style cuisine – They get their name from Mannheim, Germany, home of Mozart
  • Steak anything – evidently Mannheim Steamroller founder Chip Davis is a steak fan (We do an amazing “Peppered Beef Martini“!)
  • Pumpkin Pie – it’s the one dessert listed on their website (Our “Pumpkin Pie Mousse“, presented in demitasse cups, is a seasonal favorite!)

Fun Fact: Mannheim Steamroller is the #1 Christmas music artist of all time, selling more than 27 million albums! The second highest Christmas artist is Elvis Presley, who also performed live at the Fox Theatre!

Allow me, please, to leave you with a taste of this magnificent band through this video

Now, get your tickets to see them at the Fox Theatre!

Holiday Shows to Celebrate

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

Citizens of Atlanta and visitors from around the world have been celebrating Christmas and the Holiday Season at the Fox Theatre since its doors opened, whether through magnificent shows in its 4,678 seat auditorium or catered special events in their lavish ballrooms.

When the Fox Theatre opened on Christmas Day in 1929 there was no holiday programming, but just going to the brand new, magnificent, highly anticipated Fox Theatre was a celebration in and of itself that Holiday Season!

Today, the Fox Theatre offers a plethora of holiday shows, and the Egyptian Ballroom, Grand Salon & Terrace, and Landmarks Lounge are bustling with holiday celebrations and client entertaining.

Historically, Saturday nights in December are the traditional evening for company holiday parties, but we’ve seen a departure from that over the years, which means for many companies that the venue possibilities for their annual holiday party is greater, by far.

I invite you to contact our Private Events team for availability, and ask about discounts on beverage packages on non-peak days. Also, if you use Affairs to Remember as your caterer, there’s an automatic savings!

Allow me to entice your taste buds by sharing a few of our client’s favorite dishes for the Holiday Season:

  • Sliced Turkey and Waffled Dressing
  • Deep Fried French Cut Turkey Breast
  • Butternut Squash and Pecan Risotto
  • Goat Cheese Ravioli with Orange Fennel Cream
  • Mac ‘n’ Cheese with rendered-in-the-moment Lardons
  • Carved ‘Osso Bucco’ + Two

Is your mouth watering yet?

For dessert, we have extensive offerings, but a couple of holiday favorites include our Peppermint ‘Simply Chocolate on a Stick’ and our Gingerbread Truffles!

If you’re looking to plan your event in conjunction with a show on the Fox Theatre stage, here are some that you have to choose from this year:

Whether you’re entertaining clients or hosting your company’s holiday party, connect with us and enjoy our one-stop-shopping option…we can take care of booking your entertainment, contracting an event designer, arranging for you’re A/V needs, getting a band or DJ…we can do it all!

We look forward to helping you celebrate the holidays!

Your Rock & Roll Menu

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

Challenge: Use as many Bonnie Raitt album titles as possible in a single blog post.

Challenge accepted!

If you’re a Rock & Roll fan, you may be looking forward to the upcoming Fox Theatre performance by Grammy Award winner and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer…give it up, everyone, for the one and only Bonnie Raitt!!!

Let’s have a closer look at Rock & Roll and then we’ll dig in deep on designing a Rock & Roll menu!

According to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Rock & Roll is:

Rock and roll is a form of popular music that emerged in the United States in the late Forties and early Fifties. But rock and roll’s roots can be tracked back centuries to drum beats in Africa and Celtic folk music in Europe. As people from these regions immigrated to America, they brought their music with them, and as they were exposed to each other’s music, they began to incorporate different styles.

The more immediate roots of rock and roll lay in the so-called “race” music, or rhythm & blues, and “hillbilly” music, or county & western of the Forties and Fifties. Other significant influences include blues, jazz, gospel, boogie-woogie, folk and bluegrass.”

I’d appreciate your sweet forgiveness for me takin’ my time to get to the menu-making part of this post…hopefully I’m just in the nick of time of not losing your attention.

I know there are some who have a longing in their hearts for an actual, full-fledged menu that you can directly tie to rock and roll, but my menu writing has only ever been for family and friends, and that’s only every now and then.

However, what I’ve done for you here is to present a few menu items that you can call, with great comfort, rock and roll “inspired”, specifically with inspiration from rock and roll stars who have performed at the Fox Theatre!

  • Elvis Presley – performed at the Fox Theatre in 1956. He had Southern Fried Chicken on his wedding menu.
  • Meat Loaf – performed at the Fox Theatre in 1994. It’s rumored that Meat Loaf doesn’t care for meatloaf, but loves pork chops!
  • Prince – fellow Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee with Bonnie, Prince performed at the Fox Theatre multiple times, first in 1982, and his final performance was at the Fox Theatre in 2016. Reportedly a huge fan of sweets—in moderation, of course—among Prince’s favorites was chocolate macadamia nut cookies.
  • Lynyrd Skynyrd – performed at the Fox Theatre in 1976. They originated the insanely popular song “Sweet Home Alabama“. The state fruit of Alabama is blackberries—my favorite food—so, may I recommend Blackberry Cobbler for dessert.

There you go…a rockin’ beginning for an awesome rock and roll menu, that doesn’t even need to be road tested!

Just days before the Fox Theatre became a National Historic Landmark in 1976, Bonnie Raitt performed on the Fox Theatre stage for the first time. She returned the next year and now, 40 years after her Fox debut, she will again grace the stage of the Fox Theatre!

Rock on, Fox fans!
