Your Signature Cocktail

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

One’s wedding day cocktail hour may be when many of your guests will meet for the first time or for the first time in a long while. Why not give them something to talk about right away…your signature cocktail!

Out of ideas after so much wedding planning? We’ve got you covered. Among our Fox Theatre-exclusive cocktails is our Hibiscus Mint Shrub Vodka Martini. Hibiscus is used in tea—we Southerners love our tea!—and the hibiscus’ large, showy blossoms are found throughout the finest Southern landscapes.

If you’ve never had the pleasure of enjoying a shrub cocktail, it offers a unique flavor profile, one that has gained popularity in recent years but has origins as far back as the 17th Century. Shrub syrup includes drinking vinegar that is usually infused with fruit juice, herbs, and spices.

If you’re looking for something on the sweeter side, our Peachtree Street Bellini–also a Fox-exclusive libation—may be just what you’re looking for!

But if you have something else in mind, your AFFAIRS at the FOX Catering Consultant can help your dream signature cocktail become a reality! While you’re at it, check out our Fox-exclusive foods, too!

Most importantly, we want to help you make your signature cocktail all about you and your recently wedded spouse. We want to your signature cocktail to be part of your Fox Food Story, one that you’ll tell for generations!

Take It to the Terrace

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

We Southerners love an outdoor party, especially if it’s not too far from air conditioning.

At home, we might host said party on our patio, our porch, our balcony, our veranda, or—of Golden Girls fame—our lanai.

At the Fox Theatre we have the magnificent Terrace!

The Terrace is complimentary when renting the Grand Salon for your special event. It allows for a multi-stages event (read: wedding ceremony in the Grand Salon, cocktail hour on the Terrace, reception in the Grand Salon), as well as multi-space events (read: cocktail reception in the Grand Salon, cigar roller or henna artist on the Terrace). Hosts can arrange for bars to be set up in the Grand Salon AND on the Terrace, a great convenience for guests.

For a larger crowd—using the Grand Salon & Terrace—the Terrace can be set with tall cocktail tables, to accommodate more guests. Or, for events of larger groups of guests who are using the Egyptian Ballroom AND the Grand Salon & Terrace, the Terrace can be set with plush furniture groupings. In the cooler months, the Terrace is easily tented.

The point here is that the Fox Theatre‘s Terrace is a highly versatile, lovely outdoor space. And, while Terrace replicates the architectural style of the Ponce De Leon Avenue street level exterior, you’ll know you’ve been elevated to new vistas. You and your guests will get to enjoy some fresh air, a close-up view of the tallest skyscraper in the Atlanta skyline—especially beautiful at night—as well as some of the city’s canopy.

And you’ll be just steps away from the air conditioning!

Desserts During Intermission

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

Looking for ideas for entertaining clients this summer? I think you might love this one…and it includes the Fox Theatre!

Picture it, Landmarks Lounge, 2017…

You and a few of your colleagues host a few to a couple dozen clients (or a dozen clients with a +1) at the Fox Theatre. That alone immediately makes it a special event!

If you’d like we can handle the logistics for offering your guests a pre-show behind-the-scenes tour of the Fox Theatre.

Then, back in Landmarks Lounge, your guests can skip the concession lines because they have their own bartender (Imagine a specialty cocktail designed after the show you’re seeing!) and a special menu that you’ve selected for them. You can even do a pre-show menu and then have desserts magically appear for your guests to enjoy during intermission!

May I recommend our Deconstructed “Twix Bar” Shots and our Popcorn Truffles. Of course, you’ll want to have some of our gourmet popcorn….choose from Rosemary Caramel Apple PopcornWhite Chocolate Pecan Pie Popcorn, and S’mores Popcorn! See the concessions stand inspiration?

The possibilities are endless!

Ready to fascinate your clients? To give them an experience that they’ll talk about for years? Call us…let’s get this Fox Theatre party started!

Southern Celebrities Can Boost Bids

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

I don’t know about you, but I love spotting celebrities and getting photos of them is great, too…without being paparazzi about it. Even better…getting a photo with them!

When planning your next fundraising event, consider including some celebrity lookalikes to welcome and interact with your guests. If you want to give your event a Southern flare, perhaps you’d like to have Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler at your party. [Photo above: Picture This! Photography]

We hear Scarlett just loves barbeque! What’s on your menu?

We’ve worked with our dear friends at Lee J. Howard Entertainment for decades. They’re a longtime trusted partner. And they’re the ones who can locate awesome talent such as Scarlett and Rhett–as well as many other celebrities–in addition to many of our clients’ other entertainment needs and wants! We’ve had the pleasure of working with this particular Scarlett and Rhett on numerous occasions and I can tell you from first-hand experience that they’re fantastic!

Other lookalike celebrities that I’ve personally seen at Atlanta parties, include: Loretta Lynn, Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, Superman, Spider-Man, and Wonder Woman, to name just a few. Some of the entertainment we’ve seen at fundraisers, include: magicians, dancers, variety acts, jugglers, and aerialists. The list goes on and on. If you can imagine it, we can likely find it.

What do you want to make your fundraising event wholly original, entertaining and successful? Celebrities!

That’s Just Peachy

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

In a notorious scene in the movie “The Bodyguard“–see more in the “Shows” tab in this post–Frank Farmer, in a late-night kitchen scene, was eating a peach. While most of the film takes place in Los Angeles, this particular scene was filmed at and is set in the luxurious Fontainebleau on Collins Avenue in Miami, Florida. Florida isn’t known for peach growing, so one could assume that the peach Frank Farmer was eating came from Georgia–however, Georgia did not become officially known as “The Peach State” until three years after the film hit the big screen.

If you’re planning a local, Southern menu for your special event at the Fox Theatre, peaches should definitely be on the menu! Although California and South Carolina produce more peaches than Georgia, Georgia-grown peaches are recognized for their superior flavor, texture, appearance and nutritious qualities. Go, Georgia!

Here are a few “peachy” dishes that you might offer your guests at your next special event:

  • Peachtree Street Bellini, a Fox-exclusive
  • Buttermilk Fried Shrimp with peach-infused ketchup
  • Atlantic Coast Antipasti, with pickled peaches (pictured)
  • Herb Roasted Salmon topped with peach-mango salsa
  • Peach Cobbler

If you love peaches, those will get your menu-planning off to a blissful start. Ask you Catering Consultant for more ideas for a menu…that’s just peachy!

And if you’re wondering why I mention “The Bodyguard” and peaches together, “The Bodyguard: The Musical” is coming to the Fox Theatre Tuesday, March 28 through Sunday, April 2, 2017. Get your tickets here!

Beyond the Reception

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

Perhaps you’ve seen photos of gorgeous wedding receptions in the Fox Theatre ballrooms, or even attended one, but have you considered that it’s also a stunning setting for other wedding events?

We can design and create for you a dream-come-true engagement party, rehearsal dinner, anniversary party…you can even have your wedding ceremony at the Fox Theatre!

Now then, how about a Southern menu…or a few of them since we’re talking about multiple events. Our professional Catering Consultants will help you build the perfect menu, but let me share a little insight on some of our Fox-exclusive menu items…they’re served ONLY at  a Fox Theatre private event, like your wedding.

Our “Peachtree Street Bellini“, a classic Southern beverage, is a popular specialty drink at wedding receptions–it works for practically any kind of party. We put our own twist on the classic, but not to worry…it definitely has peach in it! And we love that it has “Peachtree” in its name. We’ve also seen this as a welcome drink, by those who like to offer their guests a refreshing sip immediately before their ceremony.

For your cocktail hour, our Fox-exclusive hors d’oeuvres of the Southern variety are over-the-top delicious–they all are, but I’m partial to Southern food. Personally, I most love our “Pickled Okra Bacon Pimento Cheese Poppers“. When I’m preparing breakfast for myself, I’ll have sausage over bacon, but this bite has made a convert of me. AND I’d never had pickled okra before I had this hors d’oeuvre. I could eat a whole tray of them and not feel an ounce of guilt, but of course I’d never do that in polite company.

Also amazing are our “Pimento Grilled Cheese with Bourbon Bacon Jam“, our “Chicken Croquette with Tomato Buttermilk Gravy“, and our “Cheddar Biscuit with Pecan“. Is this making you as hungry as it’s making me?

If you’re wedding reception is a cocktail reception with buffets and chef-attended stations, you might love these Southern, Fox-exclusive dished: “Rustic Vidalia Onion Tart“, “White Oak Pastures Beef Brisket Slider“, and our “Chicken Fried Chicken with Wild Mushroom Gravy“.

And for dessert (Don’t be surprised if one or two of your guests do a face-plant in this one…it’s that good!), how about our “Cheesecake with Miles Berry Farm strawberry sauce and Moonshine Caramel“!

All of these are available for any or all of your Fox Theatre wedding events. And your Catering Consultant will share with you other amazing dishes that will delight and satisfy.

Please enjoy these few photos from Fox Theatre holiday parties over the last few weeks. While you look through them, image your company’s holiday party here next year!

Yes, it’s true. You can reserve the entire Fox Theatre for your holiday party! Those parties typically host thousands of guests and there’s entertainment, festive libations and delicious food everywhere, from the Spanish Room and the lobby to the Grand Salon and Egyptian Ballroom. The above photo is on the Mezzanine Level. Guests at these parties get to enjoy the Fox Theatre decked out with holiday decor, including human-size nutcracker soldiers!

At parties hosting thousands of guests, it’s important to have food stations where the guests are, in the case of the photo above, the Lobby. No one wants to leave a holiday party hungry and we’re there to ensure that guests leave satisfied and raving about the food!

I can only guess that the client selected our Grape Rolled in Blue Cheese and Crushed Pistachios served with Plumb Oolong Syrup for its festive colors…that and that they’re absolutely amazing! We’re always sure to offer clients the opportunity to select from our Fox-exclusive food and drink items, too!

I think it’s impossible to not be impressed by the majesty of the Egyptian Ballroom…it’s just not. A bit of holiday bling, a magnificent menu, awesome entertainment and a brilliant band…your guests will without question have a memorable evening!

Some clients take “festive” to a whole other level, and we’re perfectly fine with that! We love a grand party, with glitz and sparkle everywhere!

We love that there’s so much holiday decor that perfectly brings festivity to the Fox Theatre ballrooms.

There are nights that we have two different holiday parties going on at the same time…one in the Grand Salon (above) and one in the Egyptian Ballroom!

We love the feedback we get from clients and guests. One guest this year shared with us, “Last night’s event was one of the most wonderful experiences I have ever had. Many thanks to all who contributed.”

I’ve lived in towns with a smaller population than the number of event professionals it takes to create and execute a holiday party for thousands, and we’re also very grateful to each and every one of them!

The holiday decor that theatre-goers enjoy is contracted by the Fox Theatre. The holiday decor holiday party guests enjoy is provided by one of our decor partners, WM Events. They beautifully decorate the Grand Staircase and the Grand Salon. Buffet decor is provided by Affairs to Remember. Some party hosts want minimal decor and others want over-the-top holiday decor…we’re happy to do either.

Chef Ahmad’s Southern Palette

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

Today, a longtime veteran of working in the Fox Theatre kitchen during AFFAIRS at the FOX events, Chef Ahmad Nourzad has a rich food history, one that includes some rather delicious New South fare, quite popular for fundraising events. Comfort food delights and people bid more when they’re happy, right?

Born and raised near the Caspian Sea, Chef Ahmad has traveled the world. He learned to cook from his mother—as so many of us Southerners did—studied the culinary arts in Vienna, Austria, where he also worked as a chef for a period of time, then traveled to Austin, Texas, where he continued to grow his culinary expertise.

He eventually moved to Atlanta, where many locals remember his signature menu at Eureka where he delighted guests with his Southern and Southwestern fare. Today, he creates menus featuring a wide range of cuisines, including some of the best Southern food you’ve ever had!

What’s his favorite food? Tomatoes, which beckon memories from his childhood. Just writing that has me craving a classic Southern staple, the Tomato Sandwich, of course with mayo and lots of black pepper!

I grew up in Tehran, Iran—a lush, green, bountiful country. We would buy truckloads—literally!—of tomatoes, when they were at their peak, for canning. Hours of blanching, shocking, peeling…I can still remember the taste. Local olive oil and simple sea salt were just about all we needed to ‘put up’ tomatoes for winter.” – Chef Ahmad

Since his time with Affairs to Remember, Chef Ahmad has been working with the Fox Theatre, a place where he loves to elevate the guest experience through the food they’ll enjoy.

Our clients are treated to multiple tastings prior to their event, the first being a welcome to Affairs to Remember and an opportunity to discuss the client’s menu, decor and other details. In this tasting, Chef Ahmad treats clients to a Chef’s Choice organic vegetable or fruit dish, with ingredients from our on-premise Chef’s Garden! Chef Ahmad is responsible for what’s planted in the garden, that clients and other visitors see on their way into our offices and Tasting Salons.

Chef Ahmad creates new menu items weekly featuring local and/or organic produce that he sources from local farmers. To expand upon this practice, Chef Ahmad began offering Affairs’ clients a Farm-to-Party solution that includes local produce, proteins and artisan ingredients. For this option, which we’ve offered for a number of years now, clients share with us what protein they would like (beef, chicken, fish, etc.), what method of cooking they like (fried, grilled, roasted, etc.), and what flavor profile they like (Southern, Mediterranean, Pan-Asian, etc.), as well as what foods they don’t like. When it’s time to shop for the event, Chef Ahmad selects the freshest, in-season produce and local produce for that Farm-to-Party event…it’s the freshest you’ve ever had!

Rounding out Chef Ahmad’s Southern credentials, he is an alumnus of the prestigious Georgia Grown Executive Chef Program, which effectively make him an ambassador who shares the “buy local”, “buy Georgia-grown” message with fellow chefs and consumers across Georgia. He continues to embrace this philosophy, giving our client fresh, local foods, while supporting our local economy.

If you’re looking to feature a Southern menu at your next fundraiser event at the Fox Theatre, look to Chef Ahmad Nourzad to elevate your food for a magical guest experience, an experience that will make your guests gladly bid, bid, bid!

A Fox Theatre Holiday

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

Let’s talk about Southern Hospitality.

Is it real? That depends on who you’re asking, of course. There are some who think that it’s bunk and others who live by it. One thing I know for sure is that food is always part of it.

One description of Southern Hospitality says that it’s “a phrase to describe the stereotypical residents of the Southern United States as particularly warm, sweet, and welcoming visitors to their homes, or to the South in general.”

I like to think that’s what my friends think of me and my Southern friends, but that same description fits many of my friends from other parts of the country and the world. I’m grateful that “Southern Hospitality” primarily has a positive connotation, regardless of where the “Southerner” is from.

My experience at the Fox Theatre consistently meets the definition of Southern Hospitality…a good thing since it’s at the epicenter of the New South!

If you’re considering hosting your holiday party at the Fox Theatre, know with confidence that we welcome you warmly into our special events “home” and we have amazing sweets for you to offer your guests!

We believe that a warm welcome is accentuated by—and wholly important to a pleasant stay—a delicious menu. It’s often fun to treat guests to “new” or “reimagined” dishes—and it’s perfectly fine to do that—but the holidays, to me, are a time of tradition, a time when people like to enjoy comfort food…the holidays are a time to create and share memories for a lifetime.

For the holidays we offer both comfort food and creative twists on seasonal favorites.

If you’re a traditionalist, you very well may like (or totally love!) our Sliced Turkey and Waffled Dressing. We take our mirepoix and sage herbed stuffing and griddle it into a waffle and then a chef attendant tops it with mashed potatoes, sliced roasted turkey, traditional gravy and rustic cranberry relish…all of it house-made, of course!

If you want add something to your menu that’s comfort food with a creative twist you might like (or totally love!) our Goat Cheese Ravioli with Orange Fennel Cream! For this dish, an attendant chef will simmer locally crafted goat cheese ravioli in orange fennel cream and finish it with fennel ‘dust’ and shredded Parmesan. In the words of Rachael Ray, “It’s delish!

Great food, good manners and a warm, welcoming atmosphere…that’s Southern Hospitality to us, and we’d love to share ours with you.

If you’ve not yet booked your company holiday party, call us and let us help you plan your Fox Theatre special event, offered with a generous helping of Southern Hospitality.

Thank you for reading AFFAIRS at the FOX Blog, and as some of my Southern friends say, with genuine warmth, “Y’all come back now, ya hear?

A Southern Movie Birthday

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

Geographic location has long influenced birthday traditions. The greatest variances are at the continent, country and culture levels, but for this post let’s focus on a “Southern” birthday celebration at the Fox Theatre!

Let’s look at a few movies set in the South for menu inspiration that also in some way tie to the Fox Theatre. First—just for clarification—the Fox Theatre is precisely at the epicenter of the New South—it’s true. Just ask any of the bazillion Fox fans!—thus my focus on movies in the South.

Ready…Set…Action!

Walk the Line“, a film chronicling the life of the Country Music legend Johnny Cash, was set in the South. If you’re a fan of Johnny Cash—who performed at the Fox Theatre in 1977 and throughout the South—take your pick of Southern cuisines for your birthday celebration…and put on a Johnny Cash record! Or a Johnny Cash playlist, depending on which birthday you’re celebrating.

Fried Green Tomatoes“, screened at the Fox Theatre in 1992, the year it debuted, is set in Alabama. You can build a menu based on Alabama favorites or talk with us about the wide range of dishes we make using our house-made Fried Green Tomatoes, including a classic Fried Green Tomatoes platter.

Another popular friend green tomato dish is our “PLT“. It starts with a fried green tomato and is then topped with our (AMAZING!) house-made pimento cheese, arugula tossed in red wine vinaigrette, a portion of roasted red pepper and capped with another fried green tomato! This dish satisfies Southern cravings on so many levels.

Driving Miss Daisy“, shown at the Fox Theatre in 1990 and 1999, is set in Atlanta. There are two amazing entrees you can pull from one memorable scene: pork chops (although we recommend the not-stiff kind) and salmon (we highly recommend fresh, not canned). If you’re hosting a party with a buffet, our Herbed Salmon on Tuscan Bean Salad is consistently a client favorite.

There you go…a few Southern movie menu inspirations for your Southern movie birthday party at the Fox Theatre!

Enjoy!
