If you’re like me, you love to give your parties a theme! I’ve not yet hosted one, personally, in the Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon at the Fox Theatre, but when I do, I’m totally going to have dishes that use Egyptian and Moroccan spices on the menu!
While many people associate “spicing something up” with spices that give heat, that’s definitely not always the case. I love spicy heat, but—probably like you—I’m mostly looking for flavor. And Egyptian and Moroccan spice profiles offer a LOT of flavor!
You may recall that we offer a number of Fox-exclusive dishes, some of which speak to the Egyptian and Moroccan architectural features in the Fox Theatre ballrooms. And we’re innovating new dishes all the time!
So, what are the most popular spices in Egyptian and Moroccan cuisine? Tapping multiple sources, I’ve listed them below.
Egyptian: garlic, onion, cumin, coriander, dill, chili peppers, saffron, bay leaf, cilantro, parsley, aniseed, cilantro, mint, cinnamon, nigella
Moroccan: saffron, ginger, turmeric, paprika, cumin, cinnamon, white pepper, chermoula, chilies, cayenne pepper, aniseed, sesame seed
You’ll notice that a lot of the Egyptian spices are also Middle Eastern spices. It’s said that this is because both were important destinations on the famed ancient Spice Road. A personal favorite is Dukkah. If you’ve ever enjoyed our “Fox-corn” (Pecan Apricot Dukkah Popcorn), flavored with Dukkah and caramel, you totally understand this wholly surprising, wholly delicious dish…popcorn has never tasted so delicious!
Moroccan spices also delight the exotic flavors seeking palate. Our Marrakech Market Munchies with spice-braised chicken is particularly outstanding!
I think the most surprising thing about Egyptian and Moroccan spices is just how many of them foodies have in their own cupboards. That’s to say, if you want to give those cuisines a go at home, you shouldn’t have to supplement your spice cabinet much.
Enjoy exploring the amazing cuisines in your own kitchen, then you can leave it to us to spice up your special event at the Fox Theatre.
