Royalty on the Fox Stage

★ ★ ☆ ★ ★

The stage at the Fox Theatre is a magnificent piece of architecture, one that deserves a more in-depth discussion, which I will certainly do another time. For now, allow me please to regale you with some of the entertainment presented to Atlanta over the years on that magnificent stage.

Let’s talk royalty!

Yes, it’s true. Royalty has graced the stage at the Fox Theatre, but perhaps not the royalty that first comes to mind. I’m talking about all kinds of royalty!

Performers and Concerts

The King of Rock & Roll, Elvis Presley, was on the Fox Theatre stage for six performances over two days in March 1956. Later that year he would begin shooting his first movie, “Love Me Tender“. That film has not been shown at the Fox, but there are lots more Coca-Cola Summer Film Festivals coming up!

Some other performers who have entertained from the Fox stage, and this is hardly an exhaustive list, include: Queen, B.B. King, Carole King, and the late, great Prince, whose last performance was on the Fox stage before unexpectedly passing away two weeks later, a great loss to music fans the world over.

Plays and Musicals

I’ve lost count of the plays and musicals I’ve seen at the Fox Theatre, but remember with great fondness and excitement seeing The Lion King in 2014…what a magnificent show! That magnificent show and others with royal titles that have graced the Fox stage include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • The Lion King
  • The King & I
  • The Queens of the Nile

 Movies

I’m a huge fan of cinema and have seen approximately a bazillion movies at the Fox Theatre. There’s no other place in the city quite like the Fox for a movie. Many movies with “royalty” have been show at the Fox Theatre. Again, not an exhaustive list, some of the films shown include:

  • The Princess and the Plumber (1930)
  • When We Were Kings
  • The African Queen
  • The Prince of Egypt
  • The Princess Bride

The Royal Family

The Fox Theatre has indeed entertained real royalty! Prince Charles attended an event in the Egyptian Ballroom in 1977, the year of the Queen’s silver jubilee.

There you go…a small sampling of the royalty that has graced the Fox Theatre’s stage. Did you realize you’d “rubbed elbows” with so much royalty? Remember the advice, “Dress like you might meet a princess or Prince Charming“…because you just might at the Fox Theatre!
